The absorbing films that make up this video carry an undeniable charm. Seldom is the mesmerizing beauty of Utah's desert highlighted as emphatically as you will witness here.
What nature held back in terms of fertility from the state of Utah, it more than compensated for by endowing this desert state with abundant and mesmerizing natural beauty. One only has to visit the enchanting Bryce Canyon National Park to get a glimpse of the magnificence of the state. Spread over 37,277 acres of scenic colorful rock formations and desert wonderland, the park attracts millions of tourists each year. Few, if any, return untouched by the marvelous beauty of the Park.
Centuries of erosion have shaped colorful Claron limestone, sandstone and mudstone into thousands of spires, fins, pinnacles and mazes. Collectively called "hoodoos," these unique formations are whimsically arranged and tinted with colors too numerous and subtle to name. The Paiutes who lived in the region when Euro-Americans arrived in southern Utah believed that the "hoodoos" were "Legend People" who were turned to stone by Coyote.
It was the Paiutes, living throughout the area, which greeted explorers Captain Clarence E. Dutton and John Wesley Powell in the 1870's. Many of today's place names come from this time. For example, Dutton's report gave the name Pink Cliffs to the Claron Formation. Other names - Paunsaugunt, place or home of the beavers; Paria, muddy water of elk; Panguitch, water or fish; and Yovimpa, point of pines - were derived from the Paiute language. Congress created Bryce National Monument in 1923. In 1928, Bryce Canyon was designated Bryce Canyon National Park. Numerous clips were compiled to bring you this video. They include:
Nature's Cameo: Bryce Canyon National Park - This thrilling travelogue of the Bryce Canyon National Park was sponsored by the Ford Motor Company, and offers a fascinating overview of the canyon and facilities provided for tourists. Fashion Horizons - Produced and directed by Harry Donahue, this travelogue covers several places of tourist interest in the enchanting southwest as it follows a star-studded group of tourists aboard a TWA passenger liner. The Clip provides excellent footage of pre-war fashions in Kodachrome and some exhilarating visuals of Albuquerque and parts of the fascinating Arizona desert. You also get a wonderful peek at the historic Boulder Dam. Desert Empire - Sponsored by the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad, this is an enchanting travelogue of the state of Utah. The railroad tour passes through some of the most breathtaking countrysides in Utah, stopping off in between at many natural wonders, the copper mining town of Brigham and the amazing Salt Lake.
